Kyaking And Canoeing

In the Alberni Valley we’re lucky enough to have some of the best sea kayaking and canoeing right here in our back yard.

The Alberni Harbour and Sproat Lake are two easy destinations with lots to offer. The harbour has an intriguing mixture of industry and wildlife. The tug boats herd the logs and the cormorants stand guard. The seals play hide and seek with you as you paddle along and the gulls hover near the fishing boats, hoping for morsels.

Further up the inlet is the bird sanctuary, where you’ll find lots of activity, and across the inlet you’ll find the tranquil forests of arbutus, hemlock and cedar.

At Sproat Lake you can paddle out to the petroglyphs and then tour around the many coves and inlets, admiring the pastoral harmony of the lakeside homes and their natural setting.

If you’re looking for a longer sea kayak trip, try either Clayoquot Sound or the Broken Group Islands, both world class and easily accessible from Port Alberni.

For lake canoeing, head to one of the many hidden back country gems in the area, from Dixon Lake to Great Central Lake. Use topographical maps that include logging road access and don’t forget to take along your fishing gear and license!

Whichever you choose, let the water and the rhythmic paddling strokes enchant you for an afternoon – or a week!
